Tower Crane Parts
Several of the most wonderful structures around the globe are built with cranes. The newer cranes are utilized to be able to reach higher heights. Tower cranes provide the means to move and lift building parts, materials and tools around a construction site. There are a few different components that assemble a tower crane when they are put together. Putting a tower crane together utilizes various pieces of construction equipment.

The tower crane base is normally made from a steel unit. The base of the unit connects to a custom pad made of concrete. This set-up provides the structure with stability. Generally, the construction needs to be engineered and constructed well so as to operate at optimum safety.

The mast on the tower crane provides the machinery with its overall height. The mast is constructed out of separate steel sections that are connected together. The amount of parts determines the crane's height. Normally, a tower crane has a design that allows the mast to grow during construction by adding more parts as the building process continues. This way the height of the crane could be specified, ensuring it has sufficient height to efficiently and safely carry out the required work.

Slewing Unit/Top Climber
At the top of the mast is the slewing unit. It houses the motor and machines which enables the crane to rotate. A top climber is the piece of equipment that allows the mast to grow. The top climber is located just below the slewing unit. Hydraulic rams in the top climber allow the slewing unit to be detached from the mast by raising it higher.

The term "boom", refers to the tower crane's working arm. The boom is made up of separate steel parts that are connected together, extending out from the top of the slewing unit and parallel to the ground. There is a trolley connected to the bottom which can run the length of the boom. This trolley holds the hoisting mechanism.
